How To Make a Techno Rumble Kick (Quick Method)
This is how you create a techno rumble using overdrive, reverb, delay, and sidechain compression in Ableton Live. Follow this step-by-step guide with tips for adding creative effects to enhance your mix.
This week I wanted to push my creative boundaries experimenting with a genre I'm typically not drawn to, Techno, and chose to practice creating a rumble as these are a quintkicensial element of this genre. I started there and it took me in journey for a couple of days. There is a video with sample of the final result at the bottom of this post.
Ok, let's go!
Start by choosing a kick sample or creating your own. For this exercise I just created my own kick and resampled it. Here it is how it sounds:
Route the signal from the kick into a new track / channel.
Here is where things get fun. The basic ingredients of a rumble are an overdrive to bring up mid and higher frequencies, a reverb, a delay to create a hypnotic effect a filter to reduce noise and create character and finally, a side compressor linked to the kick to create a bouncing effect.
This is how this chain sounds:
You can add more flavour by experimenting with your own audio effects. I pushed the sounds a bit further with some erosion, and other delays and that kicked off the mixing journey for me that motivated me to add extra percussion, syncopated synths, etc.... here is a quick preview the sound in the context of my mix.
